i’ve self- diagnosed myself with IBS i only just started getting sharp shooting / stabbing pain right at the bottom of my stomach, around my bladder, and it lasts for about 20 – 30 seconds then it goes away. it only started 2 days ago when i was thinking about my trip on the train to london yesterday but i didn’t go because i had loads of anxiety attacks.

It really depends. I have on and off IBS, and I have an anxiety disorder. It comes and goes. If you have a disorder, it may reoccur more often, depending on how much anxiety you endure. If you don’t have an anxiety disorder, by the time you calm down from your temporary anxiety everything should return to normal.

I do not wish to be too specific about the symptoms of my disease, except to say that they are digestive in nature and sometimes require me to spend long periods of time in the Ladies’ Room. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases.

Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause. In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators.

Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important.

Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, Fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system.

IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it increases a patient’s medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism. Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer’s life.

In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). As of today, palliative treatments are only in the experimental stage, and the hard truth is that there is no cure for IBS.

Extreme muscle tension not responding to anything (+ other symptoms)?

I’ve been having these odd symptoms over the past few months: severe pressure at the base of my skull, lack of focus, it feels like my mind is physically unable to relax, cognitive problems, mild to moderate pain all over my body, irritable bowels, stiffness, and exhaustion. I realize most of these problems seem like they could be attributed to stress, and I thought that was the problem for a while. But this anxiety and depression seems unnatural, like my actual thoughts and attitudes aren’t consistent with what I’m experiencing. I don’t respond to any sort of stress-relieving techniques and exercise makes me feel much worse. My feet go to sleep really easily and go from purple to white to red, and sometimes (this winter it was bad, but my doctor says it doesn’t seem like frostbite?) when I take a shower they seriously feel like they’re on fire..and I have a semi-controllable twitch in my right cheek (massage therapist thought something seemed off in my jaw area) but it’s extremely tiring to have to tell myself not to do it. It feels numb, too.

But the weirdest symptom so far and that’s stuck out the most to my doctor and massage therapist (and me too obviously) is this severe muscle tension in my shoulders, neck and scalp. The first three times I got a massage the therapist said she could feel them releasing somewhat and was optimistic. But since that third time it had been getting worse, so I went to my doctor again who prescribed me muscle relaxants and referred me to a neurologist (mostly because of the head pressure). The muscle relaxants haven’t helped, and the tension and pressure keep getting worse. A couple days ago I went back to the therapist and she was shocked–couldn’t move my muscles more than a few millimeters, and even then they snapped right back. She told me I should see a neurologist too–that she thinks she was wrong about the tension being structurally-caused, but I can’t get in until the end of April.

Like I said, at first I thought it was just anxiety or something, and tried to ignore it, but…I don’t even have the mental energy to worry about anything, and it’s not like I ever worry about my health anyway. I feel awful constantly, and I’m at a point where I can say with hardly any doubt that these symptoms are real.

So, first question: what do you think this could be? Meningeal compression seems to fit my symptoms the best (like, most of them sound *exactly* like what I’m experiencing. except my pain hasn’t been that bad), but the feet thing and jaw thing don’t fit. My doctor thought Raynaud’s syndrome could be causing the symptoms in my feet, but it just seems unlikely that I’d have two neurological issues at the same time. I guess Lyme disease is possible too since I was near/in the woods this summer for a service project, and probably had a lot of uncovered skin.
Secondly, should I just wait another month or does it sound serious enough to be more proactive? I’m actually starting to get bad headaches now, not just pressure, and it’s extremely hard to concentrate/enjoy life at all. :(
and is it possible for a muscle relaxant to make muscle tension worse?

also – I’m a 16-year-old girl. Apparently meningeal compression is linked to fibromyalgia (have almost all symptoms of this too), which my grandma got at 17, but fibro is supposed to respond to massage..and the treatment doesn’t seem so great so I’m really hoping that’s not it. Meningeal compression can also be caused by “a spine change,” but I don’t fully understand what that means. The shape of my spine has definitely changed in the past few years but I thought it was just a postural issue or inherited body shape.

and it is possible to have 2 different conditions become noticeable around the same time—and at this point–the stress of feeling ill is contributing to the symptoms

fms is actually rare–it is highly over diagnosed–most people actually have something else..

and no FMS is not supposed to respond to massage–many people don’t–and its hard to tell if those that do actually had fms

First of all, I’m 20 years old. I’ve been very worried ever since me and my boyfriend got a little more intimate (July 28 i think) and of course, since it was my first time doing that kind of thing, I’ve never been involved in sex related acts before: foreplay in this case (we are both virgins). I did research on how dangerous that could be, so that day I tried to be attentive and be care full with the things we did (kissing and oral sex not more than that). The thing that worried me was that he masturbated in front of me, i was sitting on a bed and he was standing in front of me. I noticed he held everything in his hand when he finished and later he went to the bathroom and washed his hands. Then three days after that I started to feel a weird sensation in my lower stomach (like if there was gas), I started to worry a lot because of the thoughts of being pregnant from that, so 15 days later I asked my grandmother to take me to the hospital for the help of a gynecologist. I did blood test, sonography and urine test and the all came out well, the only thing was that my urine as a bit darker because I needed to drink more water. My gynecologist told me it was probably an infection and gave me something for that, but the sensation didn’t go away so I didn’t know what to think, until I got my period on August. Later I went to a gastroenterologist and she told me that I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, she told me to watch out on what I eat and gave me some pills for that but the sensation didn’t go away and I worried again. I hopefully got my period on September and October also but I noticed they were short but heavy, so that can’t be implantation if I were pregnant (since I’ve read it’s brown or pink but my blood was bright red). I still have that sensation (November 2nd) and it’s getting worse since I feel my lower stomach it’s a little hard. I don’t know if I’m getting this symptoms for freaking out about being pregnant or if i’m for real or it’s just IBS… can somebody help me know what’s this?

trust me i have anxiety disorder about my health and you can give yourself all sorts of things with worry. i promise you you are NOT pregnant so you can stop worrying about that.
yes worry does give you ibs and since this started since you started worrying i am pretty sure that is what you have! i have given it myself lots of times. nothing really works for ibs except stop worrying, relax and carry on with your life. dont give it a second thought and before you know it, all will be ok. easier said than done..i, know.
you should prob get checked for an anxiety disorder also

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition affecting the large intestine or the colon. It is a condition that can develop at any age, most commonly in the late teens or early adulthood, and affects both men and women. Women are more at-risk than males for IBS, however. One in six people will develop IBS in their lifetime, and there is no definitive cause or treatment known at this time.

IBS develops when the action of the large intestine (moving waste out of the body through nutrient absorption and muscle contractions) is interrupted and the action is altered. This can lead to constipation or diarrhoea, or a combination of both which can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing for the sufferer.

Symptoms of IBS

Doctors use what is known as Rome lll Criteria to make a diagnosis of IBS. This allows for easy distinguishing of IBS from other potential intestinal problems. Symptoms vary from person to person, and some many find that they have only one or two symptoms while others experience all of the Rome lll Criteria symptoms. The extent of these symptoms also varies from person to person.
